Helgi Hoseason who died this weekend at the age of 89 was known as “Iceland’s Protester”, mainly because he has been consistently protesting against fundamental issues in society while most everyone else wasn’t.

Helgi’s main issue was against having been forcefully baptised by the Icelandic state church. He wanted a retraction of his baptism and a note witnessing it in the social registry. He threw skyr at members of Althingi and stood out on the corner of Langholtsvegur most days with his signs, either protesting the heavenly father or political leaders such as David Oddson and Halldor Asgrimsson who he accused of having blood on their hands from having included Iceland in the coalition of nations supporting the US in the Iraq war.

Ironically, last winter most of us all became Helgi, protesting against the ills of our society. Already there is a group on Facebook calling for a memorial for Helgi at the corner where he stood steadfastly. Hopefully it will happen.
