Monday, December 7th, 2009Icelandic teen football player dies suddenly
Friday, November 27th, 2009
Members and friends of the Ithrottafelag Reykjavikur (IR) sports club and students at Verslunarskoli school are in mourning after an 18 year-old footballer (soccer player) collapsed during practice and died. A memorial service was held yesterday evening.
The teenager collapsed during practice on Wednesday night and died in the ambulance on the way to hospital. It is thought he suffered a heart attack.
The flag was flown at half mast at the IR ground yesterday and the club manager told Visir.is that everybody there is still in shock. It is like losing a member of the family, he said.
Friends and colleagues at Verslunarskoli commemorated their friend yesterday by writing in a memorial book which was supplied by his parents.
His team and classmates have either already received or will receive counselling.
It is considered highly unusual for athletes so young to die without obvious cause, but it is not unknown. A similar case was recorded just last month in Belfast.
The Icelandic footballer’s name has not been released to the media yet.
