Iceland PM’s secret Brussels meeting ‘was not a secret’

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

johanna1Johanna Sigurdardottir, Iceland’s Prime Minister, says that there was no secrecy surrounding her meeting on Thursday with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

The PM said that she talked with him at December’s climate summit in Copenhagen and at the time it was decided that they would meet in Brussels in February, and this was made public immediately – but it was not widely reported, she explained.

“I have just been talking with the foreign media now,” Sigurdardottir told Visir.is by telephone on Thursday immediately after the meeting – apparently disproving claims that she did not intend to speak to the press in Brussels.

Vigdis Hauksdottir, an MP for the Progressive Party, said in parliament that the Prime Minister had insulted the nation by being so secretive about her meeting with Barroso and EU expansion chief Olli Rehn. She added that only the leader of an Asian military dictatorship could realistically have expected to evade the media the way Sigurdardottir had hoped to.

The European Commission will decide on the 24th February whether Iceland is fit to continue its EU application further. Johanna Sigurdardottir said she feels positive after her meeting in Brussels that Iceland’s application will be accepted.

Icelandic Prime Minister on visit to Brussels

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

johannaIcelandic Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir is set to visit Brussels this week, mostly to discuss the Icesave issue.

Reuters reported that Sigurdardottir will meet with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso tomorrow to go over Iceland’s interactions with EU members the Netherlands and the UK over Landsbanki’s failed Icesave accounts in the countries, which are now demanding repayment.

The Icelandic PM said she will also be discussing Iceland’s application for EU membership.

The news agency reports that talks in the Hague last week did not yield any clear progress on the possibility of renegotiation and on Tuesday, Iceland brushed off speculation that it was looking for a mediator to seek a solution.

Details of Sigurdardottir’s trip and who she plans to meet are being kept quiet. Tomorrow’s meeting with Barroso is only known about because it appeared on his website for a short while before being removed again, RUV reported.

Greenland powerless to prevent EU sealskin ban

Friday, January 29th, 2010

sealGreenland has once again been left without an international voice due to its membership of the Danish Kingdom, with the self-ruling administration unable to formally complain against the newly approved European Union ban on seal-product imports to the World Trade Organisation.

Greenland’s international affairs are still governed by Denmark and accordingly, as a member of the EU, Denmark is powerless to argue against EU rules at the WTO, because it is an EU member state, says the Greenland Foreign Ministry’s Christian Wennicke in a report by Sermitsiaq.

Not being an individual member of the EU means that Greenland now finds a repeat of the situation experienced during the recent whaling debate, where the self-rule state’s favourable policy towards expansion is subservient to Denmark’s agreement to the hard line approach issued by Brussels in relation to whaling.

The seal-product ban is set to take effect this August while both the Norwegian and Canadian governments have already lodged complaints last November with the World Trade Organisation over the EU proposal. No decision is expected to be made in relation to the complaints in the next two years.

The EU seal import ban can be partially circumvented through a stipulation allowing natively produced goods to be imported; but the Greenland administration argues that the ban will still impact negatively on all seal-related products, irrespective of origin.
