For Iceland To Get Back On Its Feet Important Reform Is Needed Within Independence Party

Monday, March 8th, 2010

The party which got Icelandic society into this mess could just hold the keys to make things right.

It is quite a bit strange to hear people say that they would still vote for the Independence Party today, even after its Icarian flight of the past two decades and its nepotistic distribution of the wealth of the nation.

But it so happens that there are sensible, moderate people lurking in the party’s backrooms. They just have to start claiming their party back from the fanatic right. It is time for them to build from the ground what many Independence Party members think their party is about, a democratic party favorable to independent business owners and individual rights, and weed out the frentic big government, oligarcich  Friedmanites (yes, the irony but that is what the party had become).

The party attempted to confront the need to reform itself  in the wake of the 2009 elections and produced an interesting self-examination and plan for a new beginning.  But by stirring fresh and old wounds alike, the still hypnotic Great Leader managed to stir up enough hate and venom at the party’s convention that it put those plans to a halt.

David’s heir, Bjarni Benediktsson has appeared too frail to go to work on claiming the party back for its people from the special interests of fishing quota kings and fanatic republicanite ideologues.  A large part of voters of the party have been had for fools for too long now and would doubtlessly celebrate a lead from a leadership who is not afraid of the world around them, who attempt to distribute the wealth in the most efficient directions and is committed to building a prosperous nation instead of self-serving billionaires.

The old ghosts could be pushed out to the fringes where they belong with the Progressive Party. At a time when Iceland is divided because of those interest groups, a reformed Independence Party migh just hold the keys to a successful reconstruction. The moderates need to step out and claim their place, if they don’t they risk unsettling their country even more. But that place will not be theirs unless they stop the rot.

Fake Finnish physician fools patients and staff for months

Friday, January 15th, 2010

suicide-pillsA 23-year-old Finnish man has been arrested under suspicion of posing as a doctor in a medical facility, with the deception continuing over almost a year.

The man pretended to be a physician at the Karkkila Health Centre where he claimed he was a ward doctor. Police investigations revealed that the man has no medical training at all, but rather had forged his way into the position through fraudulent medical certificates in order to gain access to the Karkkila facility. He later continued the scam at an additional health centre in Karjaa.

YLE reports that police arrested the man last week on charges of unauthorised practice in the health care profession along with fraud and aggravated forgery. Whether he will be remanded into custody will be decided later this week.

The police inquiry was requested at the Vihti station some two weeks ago after suspicions were aroused by medical staff. Authorities have declared, however, that as he was under the constant supervision of a senior medical officer, the man posed no real threat or danger to his patients.

According to Pirjo Pennanen, medical advisor with VALVIRA – the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health medical watchdog – the remarkable thing in the case was that the man’s ruse continued even after he had written prescriptions for patients. In an interview on YLE radio Pennanen explained that a central registry with unique identifiers is still in its infancy after being introduced last year.

Health workers are reviewing the fraudulent doctor’s prescriptions and contacting all of the patients who received treatment.

The people of Iceland are being punished for the misbehavior of the countries financial elite

This might come as an surprise to some, Iceland had its share of financial elites, I say had because they are all gone now. Most of them are running away as fast as they can, trying to move all valuables to tax-havens before the government puts a freeze on there assets. Yes, the government of Iceland has yet to freeze any assets since the banking crisis hit almost 10 months ago.

The world never stops to let me down, everything is falling apart, there is no trust left anywhere. Even the Social Democrats who came into power only a few months ago, when Iceland elected its first pure left government, have done nothing but let us down. From a fresh breeze to a rotten old smell of disgusting politics, only a few days are needed to turn a group of decent parliamentarians into pale blood sucking pack of scumbags.

Last summer, If anyone had asked my if Iceland needed help I would have laughed in their face. Help? We don’t need anyone, we have everything right here and more. The investigations into the collapse is going slowly, but these things are complicated, that’s why we have imported help from Norway in the form of Eva Joly. Right now, that’s all the hope I have left in the system, it has come down to a single person almost. If Eva Joly can’t get those bankers, no one can.

We can’t wait for the EU membership, that thing takes years, and why should Iceland join the EU anyway? The other Scandinavian countries have turned there back on us. No help from there, unless we agree to pay billions for the Icesave accounts. Its a fact, the regular Joe’s of Iceland had no clue how the Icelandic banks could offer better interest rates then Deutsche bank. We can’t pay anyway, its just too much for tiny Iceland. The Icelandic Economic Miracle was all a big shame, we know that now, sorry. Please don’t let us pay for the sins of a handful of bankers. They had us for fools.
