Nordic teams continue strong handball showing

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

lafur-stefánsson1Denmark, Iceland and Norway are all currently competing in the main round of the EHF European Handball Championships in Austria after making it through the initial knockout round unscathed. All three teams are competing in the same group.

The main stage of the competition has two groups of six teams, only the top two of which will go on to the semi finals. Iceland currently sits in second, Denmark in third and Norway in fourth. Iceland and Denmark are tied on six points.

Iceland and group leaders Croatia are the only group one teams yet to lose a match and Iceland’s goal difference is by far the biggest – largely due to their 38-30 victory over Russia yesterday.

Norway and Iceland will clash tomorrow, with the Norwegians needing a large victory to retain hope of a semi final place. Iceland on the other hand, will be forgiven for feeling confident if they win the match.

Denmark will be hoping a victory over Croatia tomorrow will put them top of the group and insure them a place in the semi finals on 30th January.
