“Iceland is without friends in this war, with the exception of the Faroe Islands,” says Eirikur Tomasson, Law Professor during an interview with Icelandic State television.
“In the ‘Cod Wars’ we could deal with possible sanctions from the British by selling our fish to Russia; and at that time the US had an army base in Iceland and needed our help, so we had back-up from them also. Now the US has abandoned us and the Cold War is gone, and with it Russia,” he added.
“I am not sure that direct communication with the British and Dutch will take this matter any further; the question is now whether we need to get third party intervention from a nation like Spain, France, or even the EU,” Tomasson concluded.
Iceland’s relationship with other nations has been in the spotlight throughout the economic crisis and this further complication will ensure the issue stays in the news.

The American pop star Beyoncé Knowles arrived unannounced at a London Topshop yesterday to buy leggings from the Icelandic E-Label brand.
E-Label has only been available at Topshop for a few weeks, so the Icelandic designers and Topshop workers were equally surprised to see the Destiny’s Child star. Shop workers offered to close the store for Beyoncé and her bodyguards, but she declined the offer.
Former band mate Michelle Williams has also been a high profile E-Label customer, with at least six items purchased from the brand. Michelle Williams has often been in the spotlight for her taste in clothes and was voted the best dressed woman of 2009 by the readers of People Magazine.
E-Label designers Asta Kristjansdottir, Heba Hallgrimsdottir and Asgrimur Mar Fridriksson modified Williams’s clothes personally so that she can wear them in concert.
That a small Icelandic fashion label had been picked up by Topshop in London had already made Kristjansdottir and colleagues extremely proud. But for Beyoncé to personally come and purchase their leggings within just a few weeks: “We were of course very pleased; but also extremely honoured on behalf of the label,” Kristjansdottir told Frettabladid.

Copenhagen is set to elect a new mayor on 17 November, and the issue of childcare for local residents is emerging as a hot issue. One candidate, Frank Johnson of the Social Democrats, promises to place a daycare centre no further than 15 minutes by bicycle from anyone’s home.
The reason daycare has become such a pivotal issue is that Copenhagen has been suffering from a major lack in daycare centres over the last two years. The Copenhagen Post reports that at present the city estimates it needs at least 1,000 more daycare centres to accommodate the recent baby boom in the capital.
One proposal currently being floated in the city council is to provide transport for inner-city children to existing daycare centres in the suburbs. Many of these suburban centres are facing closure over a lack of children. Johnson wants Copenhagen to be “among the world’s best cities for children.” His opponents, however, are saying his lofty goal is no more than “hot air” since he’s offered no plan to pay for the daycare centres.
Johnson has been critical of the city’s failure to meet its own promise for childcare. The council recently axed its own plan to provide a childcare centre no more than 4kms from each parent’s home. There are nearly 40,000 kids under the age of five who require daycare in Copenhagen. Johnson thinks it will take his full 4-year term as mayor to fix the problem (if he gets elected).
